This resource for KS3 is based around six new pieces of music, each exploring a different style: Blues, Pop, Country, Jazz, Classical, and World music. Each piece is supplied in each of the following formats:

  • Score and instrumental parts (photocopiable) for Melody in C, Bb, and Eb, bass instruments, tuned and untuned percussion and piano
  • CD Extra containing all pieces complete and without melody (12 tracks), playable on a computer or standard CD player
  • MIDI files are also contained on the CD Extra
  • Photocopiable worksheets giving guidance on composing new melodies for each piece

Students can do any of the following:

  • Perform pieces as a solo, or any size ensemble up to a full class
  • Perform with or without accompaniment from the backing tape or MIDI file
  • Compose their own melody, with guidance from a worksheet, and perform it with or without the backing tape or MIDI file
  • Load the MIDI file into a sequencer, and compose a new melody, or alter sounds, tempo, structure, accompaniment, or print out a score or instrumental parts

'Music Teacher' magazine (June 2001) said this:

"Its delivery in multiple media gives it exceptional flexibility... Indeed it it difficult to imagine a set of classroom circumstances where it could not function effectively in some way... The music itself is attractive to listen to, with sufficient personality to lift it out of the mire of stylistic cliche and with clear, easily understandable stylistic ingredients... Many have tried with this classroom ensemble formula; FreeStyle is probably about as good as it gets."
